The Harvest
Below is the trailer to an upcoming documentary produced by Robin U. Romano of NYC. The film illuminates the risks and hardships that young fieldworkers face here in our country. Migrant Education Region 11 is proud to have been invited to participate in this project.

Needed: culturally relevant high school classes for indigenous farm worker youth!
The evening Out-of-School Youth Academy (OSYA) high school is back.
“Na’a sakuaú Inglés au Computadores?"
That is the language of Mixteco and it is asking "Would you like to learn English and Computers?" Our evening classes through the OSYA will continue into 2010-2011 school year. This is a much needed educational option for the increasing population of indigenous migrant youth in our district who are unable to attend school during the day. These OSY must work in the fields in order to survive, therefore they struggle to attend a day program, often without success.
All OSYA students have four things in common; 1.) They have very little experience in school 2.) They speak a Oaxacan indigenous language at home (usually Mixteco) 3.) They have a very high desire to learn, and, 4.) They need to work in the fields during the day in order to survive.

OSY Field Trip to Monterey
The Out of School Youth Academy provides evening courses in Basic Skills, Computer Literacy, English, Community Orientation and GED prep for young (ages 16 - 22) indigenous (from Oaxaca) field workers in the Watsonville area. The staff consist of certificated culturally proficient bilingual migrant teachers and case managers. The OSY students are so eager to learn - their participation in the OSYA has been consistently enthusiastic. We look forward to another year of success!

Welcome to PVUSD's Migrant Education Youth Advocacy Blog Site!
We offer guidance and support to a population of young people ages 16-21 who are often overlooked and underserved, yet may be working tirelessly in nearby fields supporting the agricultural labor force of our own community - our PVUSD migrant Out of School Youth. We serve those young people and families who work in agriculture, lead a migratory lifestyle and have not enrolled in school, have dropped out, or are at high risk of dropping out.
Our skilled bilingual/bicultural Youth Advocacy team offers a wide range of direct services to the OSY's through guidance and support, such as PASS assistance, Counseling and Health Referrals. We continue to case manage each OSY until they reach their academic and career training goals, or the age of 21. Currently we are case managing over 500 students in the PVUSD district area.
If you know PVUSD migrant students who are currently not enrolled in school, please refer them to us for assistance. We will verify that they qualify and enroll them into our OSY program. The OSY will be assured equitable access to programs in PVUSD that will lead them to attaining their GED or High School Diploma.
